Hopkins Rheumatology helps to #CUREMyositis

December 4, 2016 By Erika Darrah

On Saturday October 15, 2016, the Hopkins Rheumatology CARES (Centers Advancing RESearch) team was out in full force to support the “Myositis Run, Walk, n’ Roll 5k” event at Centennial Park. This annual event was created by current patients of the Johns Hopkins Myositis Center in as a fundraising effort to benefit both the Myositis Center and the Myositis Association. This year alone, the event raised over $18,000 to help support these organizations which aim to improve the lives of people living with Myositis.

The Myositis 5k was the first event for the newly formed  Johns Hopkins Rheumatology CARES initiative, whose goal is to bring together Division of Rheumatology staff, faculty, fellows and their families  to support each other, people living with rheumatic disease, and the community at large.  The team, whose “crazy enthusiasm” was appreciated by patients attending the event,  was comprised of 16 members from across the division. There were volunteers which helped with race day activities,  manned the Hopkins Rheumatology information booth, and last but not least…ran, walked, and rolled. The day was filled with many exciting firsts for the group ranging from several runners completing their first 5k, to runners taking first place in the overall men’s and women’s catagories.

Dr. Lisa Christoper-Stine, the Director of the Myositis Center, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the “amazing group of Hopkins faculty and staff who represented our division at the Myositis center walk”. Enthusiasm for this event was evident and will surely only grow in the years to come!
