1. How many weeks of vacation does a first year get?
Each first year gets 2 blocks of vacation time which amounts to 4 weeks of vacation. The 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, ACR conference, Christmas, New Year) are also divided between the first-year fellows. Hence, the fellows who are not covering get some additional time off during these holidays.
2. Do you have golden weekends?
During the weekends, a different set of fellows cover each campus (Hopkins downtown and Hopkins Bayview). We do not allow for golden weekends during the first quarter of the year as new fellows adjust to the system and to call. However, after the first quarter, fellows can arrange between themselves to cover both campuses on a weekend which allows for a golden weekend if desired.
3. Do senior fellows take call?
Senior fellows do not take call, except for the second half of the academic year when they each do 2 weeks of inpatient coverage for Hopkins downtown.
4. Do you take applicants on visas?
Yes, we do take fellows on a visa.
5. What is it like living in Baltimore?
Baltimore is called the Charm City for a reason. It is the largest city in Maryland and is picturesquely located on the Chesapeake Bay. The city itself is compact and is made up of many different neighborhoods, each with their own unique character. You can stay in quirky Hampden, the origin of Baltimore’s Honfest, or in historic Mount Vernon. Neighborhoods by the water are particularly popular with our trainees such as Canton, Fell’s Point or Harbor East. You can also opt to live outside of Baltimore with many families living around Columbia or Ellicott City, MD. An advantage of living in Baltimore is how affordable it is compared to major cities nearby, like NYC and Washington, DC, yet still boasts the same amusements and diversions!
